Black mulch can really make a statement in your garden or landscape. Mulch America’s triple-processed Midnight Black Mulch can accent your trees, plants, shrubs, walking path, play area and more. Learn more about why black mulch is good for your garden and landscape.

Why Use Black Mulch

Black mulch can be a wise investment for your landscaping or garden.  Mulch is a layer of nugget wood material placed over soil to hold in water and help prevent weeds while still letting air and nutrients flow into the soil. Mulch America’s black color enhanced mulch allows water to penetrate evenly, allowing moisture to reach all sections of your garden’s soil. Other mulches absorb water on contact and don’t allow the ground to breathe properly.

Black mulch can also protect the soil from erosion, keep soil-borne diseases at bay, keep soil temperatures consistent, and keep your plants clean. Mulches break down slowly, adding nutrients to the soil over time.. Additionally, black mulch can add visual interest to landscapes, adding to aesthetic natural beauty. Imagine seeing your plants pop against a uniform dark background. Black mulch looks great against shrubs, flowering plants, trees and more. Mulch America’s black mulch is triple processed and color enhanced. This means it will stay rich and true to color all season long.

Benefits of Using Black Mulch

There are many benefits of using black mulch to accent your landscape or garden.

Prevent Weeds

Weeds can ruin the look of your clean landscape and remove nutrients from your garden. Black mulch can help stop weeds from sprouting and even help kill existing weeds by blocking sunlight and covering them up.

Color

Mulch America’s triple processed, color enhanced black mulch will keep it’s color all season and beyond. The dark black color will look great in a variety of landscapes and gardens.

Add Moisture

Black mulch is good for your soil, adding moisture and nutrients. Mulch will prevent water and moisture from evaporating  from the soil by the sun, keeping your plants in the healthy, damp environment they need to grow.

Repel Insects

Black mulch can help repel insects like cockroaches, termites and crickets. There is some research that suggests these insects do not like the dyes used in color enhanced mulch.

Hold Temperature

Midwest summers can be steamy and winters can be frozen. Mulch America’s black mulch can protect your plants from fluctuation in temperatures by providing a layer of insulation above the soil.

How to Use Black Mulch

Did you know that mulch can be applied any time of year? Your established and newly planted plants can be mulched any time. Newly planted plants should be mulched after they are planted and thoroughly watered. Organic black mulches will gradually decompose and need replenishing to work efficiently. How often this needs to be done will depend on the mulching material used. You might find that pine bark and wood chips break down very slowly and only need to be replenished every two or three years, while other woods may need to be replaced more often. Step 1: Measure

Ready to get started mulching? The first step in using black mulch is to measure the space you want to cover. You will want to determine the length and width of your flower bed, then multiply the two numbers to get the square footage of the area you would like to cover. For example, an 8-foot by 6-foot flower bed or garden would be 48 square feet. Next you will need to decide how deep you would like the mulch to be. Most garden experts recommend that you lay approximately 3 inches of mulch. Each bag of Mulch of America black mulch should cover about 2 cubic feet or approximately 6 square feet at a 3-inch depth. This means you’ll need about 6 bags of black mulch to cover your 48-square foot garden.

Mulch America makes it easy to buy the mulch you need to cover your garden. Mulch pickup and delivery is available to make mulching easy for you. You can also pick up mulch at our facility during normal business hours.

Step 2: Spread the Mulch

Get dressed in old, comfortable clothes and put on some gardening gloves. It’s important that you wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained and gloves when spreading mulch, as black residue from color enhanced mulch can leave its mark on your hands and attire.

You can start out the mulch spreading process by pouring your mulch around existing plants. It’s important that you are careful to not cover any plants that haven’t sprouted yet. Use a rake or your hands to spread the mulch to your desired depth, usually about 3 inches.

While you’re at it, be aware of the base of plants and buildings. You might want to keep the mulch a few inches from the base of all plants and the foundations of buildings.

Your mulch should cover the entire bed of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and groundcover. You’ll find that mulching is an important practice in establishing plants. Mulch helps keep needed moisture in the root ball and mulch helps stave off weeds that could compete with the new plants for moisture and nutrients.

In addition to being useful and attractive around plants, black mulch is a great groundcover for walkways, pathways, driveways, natural areas and play areas.

After the mulch is spread in the desired location, you’ll want to water your plants. The mulch will help the soil hang on to moisture, improving soil fertility and helping your plants grow.

Step 3: Make the Color Last

You’ll find that Mulch America’s triple processed, color enhanced mulch has many advantages over conventional mulch. The most obvious is the rich black hue, which is achieved through a patented process. Your mulch might fade slightly during the growing season. Turning and raking the mulch every 3 or 4 months will help it keep its dark black color.
