Why Use Red Mulch

In addition to its striking cedar hue, red mulch offers many benefits to your garden and plants. Mulch is a layer of nugget wood material placed over the soil to hold in water and help prevent weeds while still allowing nutrients and air reach the soil. Mulch America’s red color enhanced mulch allows water to penetrate evenly, which lets moisture reach all sections of your garden’s soil. Other mulches absorb water on contact and don’t allow the ground to breathe properly.

Mulch America’s red colored mulch is useful for protecting soil from erosion. Covering your garden with mulch can also help prevent soil-borne diseases, keep the temperature of your soil consistent, and help keep plants clean. You’ll find that wood mulch breaks down slowly, which adds nutrients to your soil over time. You’ll also find that red mulch adds visual interest to your garden and landscape. Imagine seeing your fresh green plants and shrubs pop against rich red mulch. Mulch America’s red mulch is triple processed and color enhanced. This means it will stay rich and true to color all season long.

Benefits of Using Red Mulch

You will find many great reasons to use red mulch in your garden or landscape.

Repels Insects

Did you know that red mulch can help repel insects? Insects like cockroaches, termites and crickets don’t like mulch and the coverage it provides over the soil and the dyes in color enhanced mulch.

Holds Temperature

It’s something they say about the weather in the Midwest: If you don’t like the weather, wait a day and it will change. Mulch helps soil hold its temperature even as weather changes to keep your plants healthy.

Adds Moisture

Red mulch is good for soil. It adds nutrients as it breaks down and helps soil hang on to moisture. Mulch will prevent water from being evaporated from your soil by the sun, keeping your plants in the moisture-rich environment they need to grow.

Prevents Weeds

Mulch does a lot more for your garden than just provide soil moisture. Mulch can also help stop weeds from growing. Red mulch can deter weeds from sprouting and can help kill existing weeds by covering them and blocking sunlight. Weeds can compete with the plants in your garden and ruin your clean look.

Adds Color

Red mulch offers a rich, cedar red hue that suits a variety of landscapes and gardens. Because Mulch America’s red mulch is color enhanced, it will keep its hue all season long.

How to Use Red Mulch

Red mulch can be applied to your garden, landscape, flower beds, walking paths and more. You can apply mulch around established plants any time of the year. You can put mulch around newly planted plants after they have been thoroughly watered. Organic, natural mulches, like Mulch America’s red mulch, decompose gradually. This allows them to slowly add nutrients to the soil below and means the mulch will last a long time in your garden. How often you replace your mulch depends on the kind of material used. Our color-enhanced, hardwood blend mulch may only need to be replaced once a year. Learn more about how to use red mulch. Follow the three simple steps below to get the best results with your red mulch.

Step 1: Measure

Your first step in using red mulch is determining how much mulch you’ll need. You can determine how much mulch you’ll need by calculating the square footage of the area you’d like to cover. You’ll want to measure the width and length of your flower bed, then multiply the two numbers to get the square footage. For example, a 6-foot by 8-foot flower bed or garden would be 48 square feet.  Then you’ll need to decide how deep you’d like the mulch to be. Most garden experts recommend that you apply about 3 inches of mulch. Each bag of Mulch of America red mulch should cover about 2 cubic feet and about 6 square feet at a three-inch depth. This means you’ll need about 6 bags to cover your 48-square foot garden.

Step 2: Spread the Mulch

Get dressed in old, comfortable clothing and a pair of gardening gloves. When spreading mulch, it is important that you wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained and gloves because the red color in mulch can transfer to skin, hands and clothing.

Start the mulching process by pouring mulch around existing plants. Don’t cover any seed that haven’t sprouted yet or seedlings. From there, use your hands or a rake to spread the mulch to your desired depth — about 3 inches. It is best to give your plants, trees, and shrubbery about three inches of space around where the mulch goes. It is also wise to keep mulch a few inches from the base or foundation of your home or building.

Spread the mulch so that it covers entire beds of shrubs, trees, annuals, perennials or ground cover. Using mulch is an important practice for growing healthy plants. Mulch helps save  moisture in the roots of the new soil. Mulch also helps stop weeds that can compete with new plants for nutrients and water. Mulch can be used for driveways, pathways, play and natural areas.

After the mulch is spread, it’s time to water your plants. The mulch will help your soil hold moisture, improving the fertility and helping your plants grow.

Step 3: Make the Color Last

You’ll find that triple processed, color enhanced mulch has many benefits over conventional mulches. The most obvious benefits are the rich hues, achieved through a unique patented process, but you’ll discover many other pluses as well. Though it is designed to fade less than other mulches, it might fade slightly over the growing season. Raking and turning the mulch every 3 or 4 months will help it keep its rich Rosewood red color.
